Is it possible to get away with not going to the DMV for a new picture for your ID?

My state ID expires in 13 days and I'll be 23 then. On the DMV website for my state (MA), it says I can renew online but if my picture was taken before I was 21 (I was 18 at the time), I have to go in to get it taken again. I know I haven't changed since then. I've compared my ID picture to my recent pics and the only difference is a change in hairstyle. How much do girls even change between 18 and 21? It just feels unnecessary.

So my question is, is it possible to renew my ID online anyway? Despite my picture having been taken 3 years before the "cut off"? I would love to avoid waiting at the DMV for hours if it's at all possible. Is it possible to get away with not going to the DMV for a new picture for your ID?
If you try to renew it online it may tell you that you must go to a DMV office for a new photo. Try it out and see what happens.
Is it a profile pic? Where I live people under the age of 21 have to turn their head slightly. Once you are of legal age your picture is forward facing. Could be why.Is it possible to get away with not going to the DMV for a new picture for your ID?
