Most dmvs are packed on Monday and Fridays. The smartest and less time-consuming thing for you to do is to go online and make an appointment. Down here in Florida, you can make it a couple days ahead of time so i don't see why that would not be the case where you are.

Of course if you don't mind sitting in those hard chairs surrounded by a bunch of coughing strangers who let their children run around with snotty nose then go right ahead and sit and wait.

If you lost your drivers license and just want a replacement then you can do that online too. Just print out a receipt and stick it in your car in case you get pulled over. It doesn't take long for them to send out a duplicate license.

As far as wait time, i would probably allot myself 3 hours. How long to wait in line at DMV (san diego)?
If you are a member of the AAA Auto Club, you can do a lot of DMV work there such as: order a duplicate title, get new plates (so they're not mailed to you), get a disable parking permit, get a new registration, verify a VIN, pay for tags and receive them right there (so they're not mailed to you), put your car in (or out of) non-op status, order personalized plates, solve a DMV problem, register an out of state vehicle...and more. The waiting time is usually less than 10 minutes, very occasionally more that 20mins. Some people join the AAA just for the DMV services.
